Zion Lutheran Church
Houston, Texas

Helps you know and experience the love God showed us all in Jesus Christ.

Committed to touching hopes and needs in concrete ways, just as Jesus did.

We Are Disciples of Jesus

The people of Zion believe that they are gathered and sent by Jesus for the sake of the world. We live this belief through the seven faith practices.

We Invite

The people of Zion want everyone to know the love that God has shown to all people in Jesus. We try to reach out to the hopes and needs of people in real ways - just like Jesus did.

We are both sinners and saints. Being "sinners" means that everyone has their problems, struggles, fears  and failures. We confess these truths and ask Jesus and those around us to help us through them. Being "saints" means that Jesus lived, died and rose again to give us hope for this life and the life to come.

We are one through Jesus. Jesus is the reason that all people - regardless of race, color, age, marital status, ethnicity, sexual orientation, language, abilities, and economic class - are welcome. All of our events and programs are open to the community.

We Worship

Zion has two worship services each Sunday at 8:30 and 11:00 AM. The early service tends to be more "traditional," while the late service is more informal. The late service also has a "children's sermon" and "children's church." Staffed nursery is always available.

Holy communion is celebrated every Sunday and is open to all people.

Baptism is also administered at public worship after the pastor has met with the individual or family.

There is also a coffee fellowship hour beginning at 9:30 AM each Sunday.  Zion uses Equal Exchange -

Fair Trade Coffee.

We Study

There are adult forums on Sunday mornings from 9:45 AM until 10:45 AM These classes cover a variety of faith subjects from Bible study to peace and justice issues. There are also learning groups for children and youth through the 12th grade.

There is an adult Bible study group each Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. that reads through and discusses the portions of scripture (lectionary) that will be used in worship the coming Sunday.

There is a Confirmation Ministry program for youth in grades 6-8, and also a Summer Day Camp.

We Pray

Zion's congregation prays, as individuals and as a community, for the whole Church, the nations, those in need, the congregation and all people according to their needs.

We Sing

Zion is a singing church! Since Martin Luther, music has been at the heart of worship. The Sanctuary Choir leads singing in the 11:00 AM service. They present special music each Sunday from Handel to contemporary praise and worship song. Rehearsals are on Wednesdays at 7:00 PM. The Christmas Choir and Easter Choir prepare and present special holiday events. These "seasonal" choirs include all who are currently singing as well as others who are able to commit to rehearsals over a shorter period of time. Zion Bells present handbell music in connection with worship approximately once each month. Rehearsals are on Wednesdays at 6:00 p.m.

We Give

Knowing that God has entrusted us with everything we have and knowing that God gives to us in order to give through us, we are blessed to be a blessing. We practice good stewardship of our time, abilities and resources.

We Serve and Encourage

There are many groups that provide opportunities for mutual support and ministry, to and with, the

community.

“I joined Zion Lutheran 35 years ago when I married my wife Peggy. What keeps me coming back to Zion, driving an hour round trip to attend church and by-passing at least a dozen other church alternatives, is the loving reaffirmation of Christ’s presence I get every time I attend.” Ken Fortner
